Officer Darian Jarrott was a dedicated New Mexico State Police officer who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on February 4, 2021. Born on April 10th, 1992, Jarrott was known for his commitment to public service, his devotion to his family, and his strong work ethic.
He began his law enforcement career with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and later became a New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officer, serving for approximately five years. Throughout his service, he was highly respected by his colleagues and the communities he served.
On the day of his passing, Officer Jarrott was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Deming, New Mexico, when he was tragically ambushed and fatally shot. His sacrifice serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily in their mission to protect and serve.
Beyond his badge, Jarrott was a loving father of four and a devoted family man. His memory continues to be honored by fellow officers, loved ones, and the state of New Mexico. His legacy of bravery and service remains an inspiration to all.
Officer Jonah Hernandez – End of Watch: February 11, 2024
Officer Jonah Hernandez was a dedicated Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) officer who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on February 11, 2024. He was the first Las Cruces police officer to be killed in the line of duty since the department's founding in 1928.
Officer Hernandez was known for his unwavering commitment to protecting his community, his strong sense of duty, and his compassionate nature. He had served with the Las Cruces Police Department for two years, during which he gained the respect of his fellow officers and the gratitude of those he served.
On the day of his passing, Officer Hernandez was responding to a trespassing call near an arroyo in east Las Cruces when he was suddenly attacked and fatally stabbed. Despite being gravely injured, he displayed immense bravery in his final moments. A civilian bystander intervened, shooting and killing the suspect, preventing further harm.
Beyond his uniform, Hernandez was a devoted husband and a loving father of two young children. His loss deeply impacted his family, colleagues, and the entire Las Cruces community. His memory and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his dedication to duty remains an inspiration to all.
Officer Anthony Ferguson – End of Watch: July 16, 2023
Officer Anthony Ferguson was a dedicated and courageous member of the Alamogordo Police Department who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on July 16, 2023. He was a respected officer, a devoted family man, and a beloved member of his community.
Officer Ferguson served with the Alamogordo Police Department for 11 years, demonstrating unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the people of Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was known for his strong work ethic, professionalism, and compassion for those he served. His colleagues admired his leadership, and the community appreciated his kindness and dedication to keeping them safe.
On July 15, 2023, Officer Ferguson was critically wounded while responding to an incident involving a wanted suspect. Despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries on July 16, 2023, marking a heartbreaking loss for his department, family, and community.
Beyond his badge, Ferguson was a loving and devoted father. His dedication to both his family and his career reflected the strength of his character and the depth of his love for those around him.
The loss of Officer Anthony Ferguson was deeply felt by the law enforcement community and the people of Alamogordo. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy of honor, bravery, and service will continue to inspire all who follow in his footsteps.
Officer Justin Hare – End of Watch: March 15, 2024
Officer Justin Hare, aged 35, was a dedicated member of the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on March 15, 2024. Serving with honor and commitment, Officer Hare was known for his unwavering dedication to public safety and his community.
On the morning of March 15, Officer Hare responded to a call to assist a disabled motorist on Interstate 40 near Tucumcari. During this encounter, he was fatally shot by the individual he intended to help. The suspect, identified as Jaremy Smith, fled the scene but was later apprehended and charged with Officer Hare's murder.
Officer Hare's passing marked the 29th line-of-duty death in the history of the New Mexico State Police, and the first since Officer Darian Jarrott's tragic death on February 4, 2021.
Beyond his professional life, Officer Hare was a devoted father of two.
His commitment to his family and his role as a public servant exemplified his character and dedication.
The loss of Officer Hare deeply affected the law enforcement community and the citizens of New Mexico. Funeral services were held in Albuquerque, where hundreds, including state leaders and fellow officers from across the nation, gathered to honor his memory and sacrifice.

Officer Jose Ismael Chavez – End of Watch: August 12, 2016
Officer Jose Ismael Chavez was a dedicated and courageous member of the Hatch Police Department who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on August 12, 2016. Known for his professionalism, kindness, and commitment to protecting his community, Officer Chavez was deeply respected by his colleagues and the people he served.
Officer Chavez was conducting a traffic stop on Franklin Street in Hatch, New Mexico, when one of the vehicle’s occupants opened fire, fatally shooting him. The suspects fled the scene, leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase before being captured near Rincon, NM. His tragic death was a heartbreaking loss for the Hatch Police Department and the entire law enforcement community in New Mexico.
Officer Chavez had served in law enforcement for two years, but in that short time, he left a lasting impact on his department and the town of Hatch. His dedication to duty and unwavering commitment to keeping his community safe will always be remembered.
Beyond his uniform, Chavez was a beloved son, friend, and respected officer who was known for his kind heart and selfless service. His sacrifice serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day.

The Officer Memorial Run offers two distance options for participants. The total distance for the run is 3.30 miles, symbolizing Officer Darian Jarrott’s badge number, 330. If you choose to run, you will complete the full 3.30-mile course in honor of our fallen heroes. If you prefer to walk, there is a 1.30-mile route available, allowing everyone to participate and show their support. Whether you run or walk, your participation helps honor Officer Darian Jarrott and Officer Jonah Hernandez, ensuring their legacies live on.
The Las Cruces Police Officers Association is raising funds to help officers travel to Washington, D.C., in May 2025 for the National Police Week Memorial Ceremony, where Officer Jonah Hernandez (#989) will be honored. Officer Hernandez, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on February 11, 2024, will have his name added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall, ensuring his sacrifice is never forgotten.
This annual event is a time of remembrance, honor, and unity, bringing together families, officers, and supporters from across the country to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
